You have one full year to complete the Online Food Manager Course. Training licenses automatically expire after that period.
Yes, the online course includes a online, mobile-friendly Study Guide, ServSafe practice test, and course outline.
No, our online course is self-paced. You may start and stop at any time, and complete it in multiple training sessions.
You may take the Online Food Manager Course from any desktop, laptop, tablet, or mobile device. We recommend Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox as preferred browsers, as well as a high-speed internet connection to view the course.
Upon completion of the online training course, you will be able to download and print a Certificate of Completion of Training. This certificate is not the ServSafe Certificate, which can only be obtain upon passing the certification exam.
You will need a PC or Mac computer, which meets the Minimum System Requirements. Tablets and mobile devices are not supported. You will also need access to a quiet, private area, where no one will interrupt you. Before the exam can begin, the proctor will ask you to move your webcam or laptop around to verify that the environment meets all exam security protocols. The proctor will also request access to your computer to close and disable any programs, files, or apps not related to the examination process.

Once you are ready, you will need to complete the following steps:

  1. Create a ServSafe account
  2. Create a ProctorU account
  3. Download the latest version of Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox
  4. Download and install the ProctorU web browser extension
  5. Verify that your PC or Mac meets the Minimum System Requirements (no tablets or mobile devices allowed).
  6. Review ProctorU Exam readiness guide
  7. Schedule your exam.

You can schedule the online ServSafe Exam as soon as you receive your exam code. We will provide you with the code within 1 business day from the date you purchased your package.
You may schedule your exam at any time. ServSafe Exam codes do not expire.
ProctorU allows you to cancel and reschedule at no additional cost. Exam codes are non-refundable and non-returnable.
English, Spanish, and Simplified Chinese. However, please keep in mind that ProctorU proctors only speak English and are not able to provide exam instructions in additional languages.
The only difference is the format of the exam. The In-Person exam is administered face-to-face by a proctor in the classroom, while the ProctorU version allows you to test from home with a live online proctor.
As soon as you successfully pass the ServSafe Exam, you will receive an email with your results and a link to download your certificate.
If your exam session is interrupted due to any technical issues or any other reason not related to test-taking irregularities, ProctorU will create an incident log and you will be eligible to receive a replacement Exam Code to schedule a new appointment. To request a replacement Exam Code, please contact ServSafe’s customer care team at ServiceCenter@restaurant.org or call 800-765-2122.
For maximum flexibility, both exam scheduling and testing is available to examinees 24/7.
ProctorU has a robust platform with multiple mechanisms to accurately detect instances of cheating. If you are not engaging in dishonest behavior, it is highly unlikely that the proctor will flag or end your exam session. If the session is flagged, it will be reviewed by ProctorU and ServSafe’s compliance team, who will determine if an investigation should be opened. Examinees will be contacted if they are allowed to re-schedule, or if the session is on hold due to an investigation.
We highly recommend that you secure a quiet and private space for the entire duration of your exam. This will minimize the risk of any unwanted interruptions which could be flagged by the proctor as irregularities.
Yes. Accommodations are available upon request. Please note that examinees are required to submit a Request for Exam Accommodation prior to scheduling the exam, as the request needs to be reviewed and approved by ServSafe's Exam Security team. Please contact us so that we may provide you with detailed instructions and the Special Accommodations Request form.

ProctorU complies with the following WCAG 2.0 accessibility:

  • ProctorU and NRAS work together once an accommodation is requested to enter it into the system for the examinee, and a ProProctor is assigned to the session that has familiarity with the accommodation and the process.
  • The textual information provided through the operating system functions well for displaying text, such as text content, text input caret location, and text attributes.
  • ProctorU’s applications will not override pre-selected contrast and color selections.
  • When electronic forms are used, individuals using Assistive Technology are able to access the information, field elements, and functionality required for completing and submitting the form.
  • Assisted technology, such as screen readers, have been approved.

No. Food and beverages are not allowed.
If you don’t pass the ServSafe exam, you may schedule a retest ($99). ServSafe’s retesting policy allows examinees to take the exam twice within a 30-day period. If additional attempts are needed, examinee will be required to wait at least 60 days from the last attempt, with no more than four attempts allowed within a 12-month period.
