And the Best and Worst Tippers Are…?

Tipping is a practice that differs from person to person. Sometimes it’s hard to know what to tip and to whom based on which service. But on the whole, people should know that many food service workers rely on the extra money to compensate for a lower base pay.

Restaurant equipment supplier Consolidated Foodservice recently came out with some interesting statistics about tippers. The best tippers: customers age 65 and older. The worst tippers: Millennials aged 18-34. Analysts attribute this lower rate to the places where younger people eat like fast casual restaurants where tips aren’t necessarily expected.

Also according to their figures, almost everyone (99.5 percent) tips their waitstaff and food delivery driver (95 percent) while far fewer tip their barista (66 percent).

Whether or not these statistics change your mind about working in food service, they’re at least interesting to see. And maybe they’ll even raise awareness about being more generous with those tips.
