The saying “it pays to be beautiful” couldn’t be more true for The Jeju Island, a Korean restaurant in the city of Zhengzhou in China. If you’re one of the first 50 beautiful customers of the day, you get your meal for free – seriously.
You’re judged on your appearance by a panel of plastic surgeons in a special area where you have your photo taken. I wonder how much the plastic surgeons are getting paid for this service.
The restaurant launched their promotion with a big colorful sign above their doors, but the city forced them to take it down. However they have no intention of stopping their practice.
I’m curious to know how effective their strange marketing strategy has been. It must be a popular place if they’re giving up to 50 free meals away per day, though maybe their beauty criteria is incredibly strict and only a handful are chosen.
In any case, they’re sure getting a lot of attention! Controversy brings customers; it’s something to think about.

Food service jobs have traditionally seen a very high turnover rate with nearly 50% of workers quitting or being let go in quick-service and 40% in mid-range restaurants. The cost of employee turnover can be high, so how can you prevent it?
Invest more time in hiring to find people who will be a good fit, then provide enough training. Be receptive to your staff’s needs and discuss schedules far in advance, and invest in them by showing you care.
