Starbucks announced that it will lend a hand to the farmers who grow its coffee by planting a coffee tree for every bag of coffee it sells through September 2016. The initiative is designed to help farmers battle the effects of coffee rust, a fungus that kills coffee trees. Rust has made it much harder for coffee growers to meet demand, reducing yields by 40 to 60 percent in some areas. Starbucks’ new initiative complements last year’s program from Starbucks Mexico that supplied over 180,000 rust-resistant trees to Mexican coffee farmers.
