Canine Catering: These Restaurants Have Gone to the Dogs

pfs-color-5

According to a Gallup poll, 44 percent of Americans own at least one dog, and of all pet owners, 73 percent are dog owners. That’s a lot of dogs! I bet they’re hungry, just like their owners. Some restaurants think so too, so rather than restricting their owners to bringing home food scraps in doggie bags, they’re offering special menu items just for dogs.

Some are secret and not actually listed on the main menu, such as the Puppuccino from Starbucks – an espresso shot of whipped cream. Dairy Queen offers a free doggie-sized cup of their vanilla soft-serve if you ask for a “pup cup” at participating locations.

Shake Shack takes it a step further with a section of their menu devoted to dogs, with items like the Bag O’ Bones, which holds five ShackBurger dog treats.

Is your restaurant canine-friendly? Allowing your customers to bring their canine companions indoors might violate health codes in many places, but if your restaurant has an outdoor seating area you could potentially advertise as dog-friendly and attract new customers. Then create a “secret” off menu doggie treat!
