NYC Won’t Preemptively Enforce Menu-Labeling Rules

After another delay in enforcing the menu labeling law by the federal government, New York City set it’s own compliance date to enforce the rules. New York City’s date of August 21 fell way before the FDA’s planned date of May 2018 for compliance. Now the City has reached an agreement with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to take a step back and wait for a federal regulation from the FDA to be completed.

Key Takeaways:

  • New York’s menu labeling law has been delayed pending completion of FDA regulation.
  • National Restaurant Association said state and city governments were using the labeling delay to their advantage.
  • Mayor de Blasio stated that all restaurants were to state nutritional information for menus in the meantime.

“Restaurants and retail chains are required to list calorie counts for individual foods and beverages as well as combo meals next to the name or price of the item.”
