Waste Reduction Saves You Money

Running a business is expensive, and finding ways to cut expenses is just as important as increasing sales and revenue. One way you can lower your costs and help the environment at the same time is by implementing a great waste reduction strategy, and if you advertise your success you could bring more people through your doors.

This article from GreenBiz lists five ways to save money at your facility by reducing waste. The article is focused on corporate settings, but the lessons can be applied to any food service business as well.

You can start by reusing whatever supplies you can to avoid purchasing new items, and store your extras all in one place so they’re easily accessible. Always opt for reusable tableware for staff to cut down on paper and plastic waste. For example, if they get free soda they should clean, use, and refill their own cup rather than disposables. Recycle everything you can.

Cutting back on food waste will likely help the most. Make wise purchasing decisions, employ competent staff, and find an environmentally friendly use for the food that does get tossed, such as composting or donate it as animal feed.
