Tech Offers Challenges and Opportunities for Operators

The digital revolution has begun to seriously change the way restaurant operators have to find new employees and make current staff happy. 44 percent of the American labor force now subscribes to web services that email them alerts about job openings. This indicates that restaurants, which still by and large handle staffing issues non-digitally, need to update their practices to keep up with changing times.

The majority of restaurants still schedule their employees using manual processes, which data shows leads to employee dissatisfaction. 56 percent of employees say they receive their work schedules less than a week ahead of time. Digital tools can potentially streamline the scheduling process and make it more fair by removing some of the favoritism inherent in letting managers schedule hours manually.

Starbucks has been a pioneer in introducing digital scheduling for workers, but its early efforts have shown room for improvement. After the introduction of scheduling software, workers reported an increase in split shifts or “clopenings,” and longer work weeks. However, the software has also allowed the chain to release schedules more than a week in advance, and the company has committed to working out the kinks.
