Taco Bell Goes Cage-Free
Taco Bell recently announced that by Dec. 31, 2016, all of its 6,000 U.S. restaurants will exclusively serve cage-free eggs. The chain has been planning to switch to cage-free eggs for several years. By the time the switchover is completed, Taco Bell will be the first national quick service restaurant to be completely cage-free, beating out competitors with less ambitious plans. The Humane Society of the United States supports the change, and estimates that this will improve the lives of half a million chickens in the U.S.
The cage-free initiative is one component of Taco Bell’s overall strategy to change their ingredients to accommodate changing consumer tastes. The brand will also eliminate added trans fats, artificial flavors and colors, and high fructose corn syrup from many of their menu items by the beginning of next year. Taco Bell’s ingredient changes show it to be a forward-thinking company that listens to what consumers want from their food. Study after study shows that Millenials want their food to be more natural and that they care about the way animals are treated by food producers. The chain’s progressive ingredient policies indicate that it is serious about maintaining its appeal and popularity in the future.
