McDonald’s meets consumer demands for healthier meat and milk

Quick service giant McDonald’s has recently announced new initiatives to source chicken free of human antibiotics and milk from cows that have not been treated with the artificial growth hormone rbST in its 14,000 U.S. restaurants.

The new policies are in response to customer expectations of higher quality food, “from the farm to the restaurant.” The chicken served at U.S. McDonald’s restaurants comes from local farms. While human antibiotics will be phased out, the farms will still responsibly use ionophores, a chicken antibiotic to keep them healthy.
