The Marriage of Convenience Stores and Fast Casual Restaurants

Convenience stores and grocery stores have commonly been an alternative to fast casual and quick service restaurants when it comes to grabbing a quick bite. Gas stations and quick stops usually have hot dogs and sandwiches ready, while grocery stores offer sandwiches and deli options, but recently partnerships have evolved bringing fast casual themes and flavors directly to the competition.

Some convenience stores are teaming up with fast casual restaurants. In Ottumwa, Iowa the Elliott Oil Company has introduced a Pita Pit to its BP gas station and convenience store last year. Now the Pita Pit brings in 38 percent of the store’s inside sales in that particular location.

However, competition with grocery stores still exists. Some grocery stores, such as Lunds & Byerlys in Minneapolis, Minnesota are offering their own in-store kitchen and restaurant for a unique dining experience. Technology is at the forefront with iPad ordering and payment, which is very attractive to millennials.
