Businesses should remove tips from bills to restore customer trust, says poll

In a poll of consumers and business executives, 63% of the respondents stated that they wish that restaurants would do away with tips all together. An even greater percent stated that tipping should be regulated by the government. These opinions are a result, in part, to restaurants’ deceptive practices of keeping part or all of the employees tips or using the tips to boost the employees’ hourly wage.

Key Takeaways:

  • Consumers and business executives would like to see tips removed from bills
  • Over half of people agree that all tips should go to employees
  • Customer priorities are changing — they are more concerned with politeness than price

“Consumers and business executives would overwhelmingly like to see discretionary charges – or tips – removed from restaurant, hotel, café and bar bills and lack of clarity is eroding trust.”
