Seeking Success With Subway

Renu Aggarwal took an untraditional path towards owning a quick service franchise business. She spent much of her adult life as a homemaker who earned some money selling gold jewelry from India to upscale jewelers in Texas. She purchased her first Subway in 1997 because she thought that franchise ownership would provide her family with financial stability for the future. She had to convince her reluctant husband to go along with her plan, but she proved to be right to go down the franchising path. Her family now owns 55 Subways in twos states and is beginning to diversify its holdings by buying a Wingstop.

The Aggarwals run their business as a family. Renu’s once-doubting husband now acts as the day-to-day manager of the business, and the couple have won several awards together from the Houston Subway Development Agent and the South Asian Chamber of Commerce in Houston. Daughter Annie handles the company’s legal duties, and son Keshuv also works in the family business. Reno’s story shows how small businesspeople can build an empire starting with one franchise location.
